The historical roots of Boonton stem from Native American settlements in the area, as far back as 1700. The first European settlers arrived in 1715 and established the area as the Canton Township. Boonton became a center of commerce and transportation when bridges, gorges, and the Morris Canal and Railroad Company were built. In 1895, Boonton, Stillwater, and parts of Rockaway Township were merged to create the official Town of Boonton. At this time, Boonton was home to textile, rubber, and machine shops.
